chats with louise / ep 5 / clara san millan

architect by trade, clara san millán moved over to the world of illustration a few years ago and has never looked back! here, she tells us how chocolate and music inspire her.

Tell us one creative episode of your childhood that was instrumental in you realising you wanted to pursue a creative career.

Drawing was my favourite thing to do. At the early age of five, I started
drawing on the furniture in my parents' place non-stop. I didn't think about my
future career back then, but I guess it was an episode that led me to
where I am today.

Tell us how you came to live a creative life as an adult.

Participating in illustration, fanzines and self-publishing fairs, and being in contact
with people who are dedicated to creativity in one way or another made me realise that I wanted to be part of it too. These are great places for promoting your work, and suddenly there's someone
who wants to work with you!

What are the challenges you are faced with living off your creativity?

For me the biggest challenge is to always try to keep a more personal line of
work alongside client commissions. Focusing on projects that interest me,
allowing myself to experiment and finding my own voice to do so. I'm confident
that's the way to keep moving forward.

What is your dream brief?

I would love to do something related to music.

Describe something that sends you into Creative Land?

Working at night with my favourite music playing and a piece of chocolate on
hand!

What I've learned so far is that, when I'm having fun, the best result is achieved.

thank you clara! clara has been working on the latest cover of Anorak Magazine, coming out in October and has had many editorial commissions from New York Times and Financial Times. to commission her, please get in touch here
